The small stuff that gets ignored — until it becomes a big and expensive problem. A sticking door that lets moisture in. Gutters pulling away from the fascia. A step that flexes when you stand on it. These aren't just annoyances, they're building defects that compound over time.
Bryan spent three decades in professional service management — environments where deferred maintenance had real cost consequences. He approaches your property with the same discipline. If something's wrong, he'll tell you, fix it properly, and explain what caused it so it doesn't happen again.
No job is too small. The minimum charge covers two hours on site — if you've got a list, bring it. We'll work through it systematically in a single visit, which is usually the most cost-effective way to clear the backlog.
- Doors — sticking, binding, draught sealing
- Windows — sashes, latches, seals
- Gutters & spouting — clearance, re-fixing
- Steps, handrails & balustrades
- Gate hardware and post repair
- Flashing & weatherboard repairs
- Fixing leaks before they become rot
- General wear-and-tear, all property types
Older Wairarapa homes — the 1940s bungalows, the weatherboard villas — have their own quirks. Bryan knows them. He knows what lasts and what doesn't in this climate.
Bryan White trained as a carpenter — proper City & Guilds apprenticeship, UK. Before returning to the trades, he spent 30 years in corporate and government service management. The carpentry skills never left. The professional standards that came from those organisations came back with them.
Most handymen can hang a shelf. Bryan can frame, trim, build and finish — with the knowledge of how wood moves, what fixings work in Wairarapa conditions, and what will still look good in ten years.
From a set of floating shelves in a hallway to a full built-in wardrobe run, to structural repairs on older homes — the same level of care and skill goes into every job regardless of scale.
- Shelving — fixed, floating, adjustable
- Built-in storage and wardrobes
- Door and window trim, skirting boards
- Architrave and joinery finishing
- Structural repairs to existing framing
- Subfloor repair and levelling
- Feature walls and panelling
- Framing for alterations and additions
For larger carpentry projects — room additions, deck builds, structural alterations — we'll talk through the right pricing model before anything starts. Some jobs suit time and materials, others a fixed price. Either way, you'll know upfront. See How We Work →
Wairarapa outdoor work has its own demands. The wind that comes over the Tararuas doesn't forgive flimsy fencing or underbuilt decks. Everything we build outside is built to handle this environment — right species of timber, right fixings, right post spacing.
Fencing across the Wairarapa varies enormously — from urban boundary fences in Masterton to farm fencing in Martinborough. Bryan has built both, and he knows the difference between a fence that'll last and one that'll be down in the first nor'wester.
For decks, we work with treated timber or hardwood depending on your preference, budget and ground conditions. We'll assess the subfloor, drainage and any consent requirements before quoting. Decks over a certain height require a building consent — Bryan will flag this early and advise on the process.
- Fencing — paling, post and rail, picket
- Gate construction and rehinging
- Deck builds — ground level to elevated
- Deck repairs and board replacement
- Pergolas and shade structures
- Garden beds and raised planters
- Retaining walls — timber and sleeper
- Section tidy-ups and storm damage
Larger outdoor builds — significant deck or pergola projects — typically get a formal written quote. The $247.50 assessment fee is credited back in full if the work goes ahead.
Wairarapa winds are no joke. A big nor'wester will lift flashings, topple fences, split timber and tear trellis off walls. The damage is often obvious — but the water ingress that follows isn't, and that's where the real cost accumulates.
Get storm damage sorted quickly. A missing flashing left for a week means water behind the cladding. Water behind the cladding means rot. Rot means a much bigger bill. Bryan's seen this cycle play out dozens of times — the repair that would have cost a few hundred dollars at the time ends up costing several thousand once the water has done its work.
For storm damage work, we'll typically turn around quickly. Call or text and describe what's happened — if it's urgent, we'll prioritise it.
- Flashings — lifting, cracking, re-bedding
- Fences blown over or posts cracked
- Trellis, pergolas and shade sails
- Spouting pulled from fascia
- Weatherboard cracking and splitting
- Roof tile dislodgement (surface access)
- Gate and post damage
- Temporary weatherproofing while awaiting full repair
Insurance repairs are handled on a time-and-materials basis. We don't provide valuations or quotes for claim cash-outs — but we're happy to provide a full written invoice for legitimate repair work that you can submit to your insurer.
Bryan is not a full-time painter — and that's worth saying upfront. What we do is the preparation and maintenance painting that keeps a property watertight and looking sharp: spot repairs, recaulking, flaking paint stripped and recoated, weatherboards touched up before they let water in.
This is often the most overlooked maintenance category. Paint on exterior joinery isn't decorative — it's the primary weather seal on most older Wairarapa homes. Let it flake too long and you've got a moisture problem. A few hours of prep and paint every couple of years is far cheaper than the carpentry repairs that follow.
We also handle interior painting for smaller areas — a room refresh, ceiling touch-up, or repainting after a carpentry job. For full-house interior or exterior repaints, we'll recommend a dedicated painter — but we'll make sure the prep work that a painter needs is done properly before they arrive.
- Exterior weatherboard spot repairs and paint
- Window frame and door frame sealing
- Recaulking — sills, flashings, joins
- Stripping flaking paint and recoating
- Interior touch-ups and small room repaints
- Post-repair painting after carpentry work
- Prep work ahead of a professional painter
- Deck oiling and staining
You know the list. It's on the fridge, or in your head, or quietly growing every time something else gets added to it. The dripping tap (not our area), the hinge that needs tightening, the cupboard door that won't close, the fence paling blown off in June that's still leaning against the garage.
Bundle them. The minimum charge covers the first two hours on site — once we're there, the travel cost is already absorbed. Working through three or four small jobs in one visit is far cheaper than three or four separate call-outs. It's also faster and less disruptive to your week.
To get the most from a list visit, send us the list before booking. It helps us estimate how long we'll need, whether we need to bring specific materials, and whether anything on the list requires a different service model.
- Door hinges, locks and handles
- Cupboard doors and drawer runners
- Towel rails, hooks and fixings
- Letterbox replacement
- TV mounting and aerial points
- Curtain rod and blind fixing
- Clothesline repair or replacement
- All the things that have "just been on the list"
Book online and describe your list in the job description field. If it's long or you're not sure what's involved, call or text Bryan on 027 202 5876 and he'll talk it through with you.
